Oakham Castle is a historic building located in the town of Oakham in Rutland, England. The castle dates back to the 12th century and was originally built as a manor house for the Norman lord, Walkelin de Ferrers.
The castle has been used for a variety of purposes throughout its history, including as a courthouse, a prison, and a school. Today, it is open to the public as a museum, showcasing the history of Rutland and the castle itself.
One of the main features of the castle is the collection of horseshoes that hang on its walls. According to legend, any peer of the realm who passes through Rutland must present a horseshoe to the lord of the manor, and this tradition has continued to this day. The horseshoes are now displayed as a symbol of the castle's history and traditions.
