Maritime signal flags are a set of flags used by ships to communicate with each other or with shore-based stations. There are a total of 26 flags, each representing a different letter of the alphabet, as well as 10 numerical pennants and three substitute flags. These flags are used to spell out messages or signal specific instructions, such as a change in course or speed.
Signal flags are usually made of lightweight and durable materials, such as nylon or polyester, and come in a variety of colors and designs. Each flag has a specific meaning or signal, and when flown together in a certain order, they can convey a specific message. For example, the "A" flag (white with a blue diagonal stripe) is used to signal "I have a diver down; keep clear at slow speed", while the "H" flag (white with a red horizontal stripe) is used to signal "I have a pilot on board".
Signal flags have been used by sailors for centuries and are still used today, particularly in the context of racing and other nautical events. They are an important part of maritime culture and are recognized by sailors around the world as a means of communication and a symbol of the seafaring life.
