Hen 2 of 4 this year (!!) has just been attended… This time we rented a cottage in Suffolk. Absolutely gorgeous place in Saxmundham. Saturday saw us doing all of the those traditional seaside Norfolk / Suffolk activites – rowing boats to never never land, Guillying (crabbing competition) picnic on the beach, Treasure Trail around Southwold and fish and chips!
But Sunday we did something really unique and new. We visited Jason and Katherine at Suffolk Cheese. We were greeted by the husband and wife team and their 2 children. After a lovely reception with drinks and a long chat to the couple about how they set up the farm after Jason was made redundant and the story of their journey; we had a tour of the farm, milked a goat, met the pigs and then milked their 31 strong herd.
Katherine is the cheese maker and demonstrated how you turn their gorgeous creamy milk into their famous Suffolk Gold, Blue and Brie.
Apart from having a wonderful day out, learning loads and eating lots of cheese I was just totally humbled by such a fantastic couple. Their ethos is strong and apparent around the farm and in everything they do – nature rules. Nothing goes to waste. They have their own little circle of life going on, any waste from the cheese feeds the pigs, that then make THE most delicious sausages (dinner last night!) and all the animals have the best life.
As we drove up the dirt track back to our home towns, I remember saying to the girls in the car “They are the sort of couple that make you want to be a good person.” And we all agreed.
If you’re ever in the area I cannot recommend a trip to see Jason and Katherine enough, buy some of their gorgeous homemade cheese, pork, veal and beef.
I’m sure you will be welcomed with big smiles and open arms, as we were.
Thankyou Suffolk Cheese for giving my best friend a hen do to remember.
